In the first decades of the twentieth century there were so many different kinds of hats that a man could truly wear a hat for nearly every occasion. And, if he wanted to be considered a gentleman, he absolutely could not go without a hat. The cultural traditions favoring headwear for members of both sexes were very strong.

For women hats became quite large, often exceeding the width of the shoulders with masses of flowers and feathers sat atop the head because the skirts of the time became narrower and narrower

These lavish hats were quite expensive and, thus, reserved for the wealthy. For the average American woman, however, hats were still relatively large and ornamented
